The van's air conditioning gave out somewhere past Dry Tallow, so I drove the last forty miles with the windows down and a tray of pink cupcakes riding shotgun. Abuela had iced every one with a sugar skull, the way she always did for the Día de Muertos stall in Cuervo Gap, as though death were just another thing to decorate for a party. In this heat the frosting wept down the paper cases and left sticky trails across the dashboard.

At the dry wash the front tyre went with a bang that sent a pink wave against the windscreen. Teo, my cousin, who had been promised a turn at the stall if he kept quiet, climbed out and stared at the ruined tray. Then he crouched beside the wheel, picked up the one skull that had survived upright, and asked whether dead people were allowed sprinkles. I told him the dead were very particular about sprinkles. He thought about that all the way through changing the tyre.
We reached Cuervo Gap an hour late with the spare still wobbling. The stall was crowded with marigolds and candles, and an old man had set a plate for the dead beside the cash box. Teo placed the last cupcake on it, green wrapper facing the road, skull grinning up at the evening light. The frosting had slumped a little, but it held. Abuela took one look, laughed, and said the dead would forgive a lean.
