Sugar skull and flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colourful sugar skull with heart-shaped eye sockets and ornate patterns sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by pink flowers, green leaves and small blue accents. The bold black outlines and smooth colour fills give the piece a clear, graphic finish. The design fills the frame across the upper thigh, with the skin visible at the edges.

You are seventeen the week the church bell in Santa Inés cracks, and your aunt sends you down the hill with a tin of pink paste and a box of sugar skulls still warm from the mould. The market stalls are already crowded with tissue flowers and paper banners, and the dust smells of the marigolds the children have been dragging home from the river fields.

Señora Ruelas has a rule for the skulls: the eyes are painted last, and never with the hand that shook the night before. You learn to pipe white scrolls with the tip of a goose quill, to set a heart into each socket so the dead can see their own sweetness, and to keep the pink flowers fat and wet until they gleam like the cheeks of a girl at a dance. On the third day the mayor's son buys one and asks you to write his mother's name across the forehead.
The name is hard to fit. You stretch the letters, then shrink them, then give up and paint a single green leaf instead, a small thing tucked beside the temple. He frowns at it. You tell him the skull already knows whose it is, and that the leaf is for the ones who came to look.
On the last night, when the candles gutter along the cemetery wall, you walk past the stall and find the skull set out on the cloth, the leaf catching the lamplight. Someone has left a marigold beside it, bright as a struck match. You pick it up, and it is still warm from a hand you never saw.
