Sugar skull on the thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey sugar skull sits on the outer upper thigh, with a rounded cranium, dark eye sockets and a patterned forehead. Shading gives the skull depth, and fine detail appears in the ornamental markings. The photo is a mirror selfie of a woman in a short black dress, with the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame and the face cropped out.

You have been icing skulls since four in the morning, because the Saturday market wants forty of them by noon and the sugar sets fast in the damp. The bakery smells of burnt orange and cloves. Mrs Okonedo at the next stall has already sold her marigolds, and she calls across the cobbles that your forehead patterns look like lace somebody dropped in the rain.

You trace each brow with a fine nib, swirls first, then the little five-petalled flowers that spread across the bone like frost on a pane. The eye sockets you leave black and empty, because the old woman who taught you said the dead need somewhere to look out from. Your hands know the work now. Your mind keeps drifting past the breakwater to the fishing fleet, and to your brother's boat, which should have been in by dawn.
By eleven the tray is full except for one. You take the last skull, the one with the crooked jaw, and give it the flower pattern you saved for yourself. The sugar cracks a little under the nib, the way it always does when you lean too hard.
The boat comes round the headland at half past twelve, low in the water and loud with gulls. You do not go down to the quay. You carry the crooked skull out to the bench by the sea wall, set it facing the harbour mouth, and let the wind dry the icing while the crowd buys the rest behind you.
