Triangle outline and small script tattoos
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a black high-cut swimsuit with layered silver chain necklaces, photographed from the chest down with her face out of frame. The triangle tattoo on the upper arm is drawn in fine, slightly broken black linework with a dotted texture, and a small script tattoo sits on the side of the torso near the ribs. The ink is black and grey, and the photo is shot indoors against a white window and blinds.

Dearest Nell, you will laugh, but I have found the third stone. Father always said the triangle in the kitchen garden was a joke of the old gardeners, three pegs of sarsen set at the corners so the cabbages would know where to stand. I thought it nonsense until this morning, when the frost lifted off the lawn and I saw the dark dots in the grass, a broken line of them, as if someone had pricked the turf with a hatpin.

I dug where the dots were thickest. Two of the pegs went to the rectory wall years ago, but the third lay under a foot of leaf mould, grey and cold, with a mason's cross cut into its face. Mrs Hale from the lodge says it marks where the boundary was once measured from. She says if you stand on it at dusk and look to the church spire, the line runs straight through the orchard gate, which is the only straight thing this garden has ever done.
I have not told Mr Pryce. He wants the stone for his terrace, and I suspect he would have it up by Friday. So I have set it back in the earth, lined the hole with pebbles from the old path, and laid a sprig of rosemary on top. Come home at Easter and bring your compass. We will find the fourth corner together, if there is one, and then we shall know what Father was really measuring.
Yours in mud and mischief, Clara
