Sugar skull portrait with rose on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A black and grey portrait of a woman with sugar skull face paint, including scrollwork and dot details, wears a veil and has a dark cross across her forehead. Her cracked, hand-like forms frame the face, and a red rose sits below her chin. The shading is smooth and detailed, with the red rose providing the only strong colour against the greys on pale skin.

You learn early on the Tres Cruces road that the dust keeps whatever you leave on the verge. The cattle grid at kilometre nine rattles under the van, and there she is, standing in the headlamps with a lace veil pinned back and a single red rose held against her chin as if she is listening to it.

"Chapel," she says. It is not a question. You have made this run every Día de Muertos for eleven years, carrying tallow candles and tin crosses to the adobe chapel nobody else will drive to, and you have never once picked up a passenger. Her hands are the colour of old clay, split into fine lines, and she holds the door handle as though it might come away. You tell her to get in. The cab smells of wet cardboard and diesel and, after a moment, of roses.
At the chapel she does not get out. She holds out the rose. "For Tomás," she says, and you realise you have not told her your brother's name. The stem is wet. You glance at the card tucked in the visor, the one with the printed skull you bought in Socorro last autumn. The handwriting on it is yours, but the petals are fresh.
When you turn to thank her, the seat is empty and the veil lies folded on the dash like a receipt. You carry the rose up the chapel step and set it beside the candles. The dust on the step lifts and settles, and for the first time in a long while the wind is not the loudest thing out here.
