Sugar skull woman portrait on arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman wearing a hood or veil, with dark sugar skull face make-up around the eyes and mouth and red-outlined scrollwork across the cheeks. The shading is soft and detailed, with strong contrast in the eye sockets and hair, and a hand rests near the chin at the lower edge. The composition is a close crop of the limb, with the figure filling most of the frame.

The marigolds in the lower bed should have been cut before the frost, and everyone in Ardelle said so. Tomas Venn carried the shears down the gravel path anyway, because his mother had asked him to and because the wind off the moor had already blackened the stalks. He found the old woman on her knees between the rows, a tin of lime beside her and a fine brush in her hand, painting pale scrolls onto the flagstones where the paths met.

"Those are for Ines," she said without looking up. Ines had been the miller's daughter, drowned in the mill race the autumn Tomas was born, and every November since, the widow had drawn her a gate of curling lines so the dead could find their way through the garden. Tomas had always thought it nonsense. He knelt beside her anyway and took the brush when she held it out, copying the swirl she made, and his lines came out thick and lopsided.

She did not scold him. She pressed a marigold head into his palm and told him a gate did not need to be straight, only open. He worked until the light went grey, and when he stood, the scrollwork ran from the back step to the sundial in a long ragged line, its edges bled pink where the petals had soaked into the lime.

That night the frost came hard off the moor, and in the morning every bed was silver except the lower one, where the orange heads still stood inside their painted gate, bright as if someone had lit them from beneath. Tomas took the shears down the path and cut nothing.
