Black fine line tattoo on a forearm showing a summation equation, an infinity symbol and the script words It's all yours.

Summation equation and infinity symbol on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a mathematical summation with a delta term and an approximation sign, a thin infinity symbol below it, and the words It's all yours in cursive script underneath. The linework is clean and thin, with no shading and no colour ink. The design is centred on a pale forearm against a light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hester had rowed out to the rock twice that week, once for the lamp oil and once because the tide tables did not agree with the gulls. On the third morning she found a note pinned under the lens housing, written in her uncle's cramped hand on the back of a pilot's chart. He had been counting the flashes for thirty years, and the sum at the foot of the page had been carried forward so many times that the pencil had worn through the paper.

She sat on the iron step and read it again. Each term was a fraction of the one before, he had written, so the total never quite reached the figure on the far side of the sign. Delta E to the n, added from nought upwards, forever, and still it would fall short of the thing he wanted to say. Beneath it he had drawn a loop lying on its side, the shape of a beam swept slowly round the horizon.

The last line was not mathematics. It's all yours, in his looping script, underlined twice.

Hester carried the ledger down to the kitchen and opened it on the table beside the kettle. She did not try to finish the sum. She turned to a clean page, wrote the date, and under it counted the gulls on the railing, then the boats coming in on the flood, then the first sweep of the lamp at dusk. Somewhere past the hundredth gull she stopped, because the light had come on, and the numbers no longer needed her.
