Small arrow tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow motif sits on the side of the torso, with a pointed head at one end, fletching at the other, and a crossing pair of thin lines through the shaft. The linework is clean and dark, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is lit by daylight from a window at the right, and a dried branch ornament sits on a dark surface in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came over the moor before the last coach could reach the Fletcher's Rest, so you are the only guest who arrives on foot, and the landlady, Mrs Orrell, looks at your wet boots and then at the sign above the door as if it has personally failed her. The sign is an arrow pointing two ways at once, its shaft crossed by a pair of thin lines where the old drovers' roads met. She tells you her father hung it there so that no one would walk past the inn in weather like this.

That night she sits with you by the range and explains why the crossing matters. Her father carved the sign from ash and fletched it himself, and every winter he walked the boundary stones with a lantern, counting them aloud so that nobody lost the line between the field and the drop. You offer to take the lantern out in the morning. She says the tracks will be gone by then, and you will have to trust the marks rather than the ground.

At first light the drift has buried the stones to their caps, but the arrowhead still shows through the white on the post, pointing down the slope. You follow it, testing each step with your staff, and find the iron hook on the next stone, then the next, until the valley road opens below you like a page. When you look back the inn is only a dark smudge, and the sign is too small to see, though you know exactly where it hangs.
