Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on paper of a stylised sun with a crescent moon overlapping it, featuring a face with closed eyes, a pointed nose and full lips set in the centre. The rays are finely outlined with scalloped petal shapes, small dots and diamond-shaped drops hanging beneath, all in clean black line. The design is drawn in black and grey on a pale background, with partial sketches visible at the edges of the sheet.

Dear Win, the new lamp-room man at Hollin Pit has been drawing on the tally boards again, and I took one home in my apron pocket before anyone could scold me. It shows the sun and the moon at once, the moon laid over the sun like a hand over a candle. He has given the sun a face with its eyes shut, and the moon has a face too, half turned away, and round both of them he has put petals and dots and little diamonds hanging down like the drops off a chandelier at the Assembly Rooms, which I have only ever seen from the outside.

Mr Pell says it is for the night men, so they know which way is up when they come off shift grey and blind. He says the sun sleeps while they work below and the moon keeps watch over the ones who come up in the dark. I told him that was nonsense and he agreed with me, then drew a fifth drop on the board anyway.

Dad's crew were moved to the Low Main on Monday, and Pell drew that one with the moon's face turned right round, away from us. I didn't say anything. I hung the board on the nail by the back door, where the lamp catches it when we come in from the yard.

This morning the bell at the top of the shaft rang six times and I stood counting the diamonds, one for each man still below, and I made the number a little smaller than I wanted. Come up on Sunday if you can. Bring the good thread for my hem. Your loving sister, Ada.
