Acanthus scroll pencil sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a spiralling acanthus-style scroll, with curling leaves, a central coil and small flower shapes at the top. The linework is fine and the leaves are lightly shaded in grey, with the design centred on a pale, slightly creased translucent sheet. The handwritten word angel appears in the top left corner.

The sheet had been pinned to the dashboard for three hundred miles, its pencil acanthus curling in the glare, and I was still fussing over the central coil when the wind off the flats snatched it through the open window. I watched it cartwheel across the road and into the scrub. Lyle, leaning on the bonnet with a flask, said I could draw another one. I said I had drawn that one four times.

The word angel had been Mum's name for the cab before it was mine. She'd had it lettered in gold leaf across the visor in 1979, back when the lorry belonged to her brother, and when he died the paperwork came to me and the lettering stayed. Every scroll I've put on a trailer since starts from the same wrist movement, a slow turn outward, leaf after leaf, until the whole thing looks poured rather than painted.
I found the sheet at dusk, pinned against a fence post by a single cactus arm, one corner torn. The pencil had smudged where it skidded over the gravel, but the coil was still there, and the little flower shapes still rose at the top as if someone had stopped to breathe. I sat on the cab step with a tin of size and a fine brush and copied it straight onto the door, working from the faint lines and not bothering to trace.
By morning the lines were gold and the sheet was gone. Lyle shook his head when he saw it. 'That's not a copy,' he said. 'That's a mistake you've decided to keep.' I didn't argue. Some of the best work I've done started out as something the wind took.
