Sun, mountains and waves in a triangle
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a triangle framing a rising sun with radiating rays and dotted shading, above layered geometric mountain peaks. The lower section is filled with flowing parallel wave lines, drawn with fine consistent linework. The design is in black ink only on white paper, with a pen and green leaves visible at the edges of the frame.

Dad had the big top's rigging on his shoulder when he told me the sea was just past the fourth hill, and I believed him until the Wakefield fair pulled into a car park with a view of nothing but a gasworks. So I painted the sea myself, on the back panel of the Madame Orsolya booth, because the fairground owner said the punters needed something to look at while they waited in the queue for the Zipper.

I did it with a fine black pen I'd nicked from the council depot, a nib that never blotted. First the triangle, because the booth folded into a triangle of canvas and the frame needed a point to let the rain run off. Then the sun, a half-ring of dots I pricked out slowly with the tip, so the light looked like it was shaking loose. Above it I drew peaks in shards, lines cutting through each other like the struts of a helter-skelter, and under them the waves, rows and rows, curling where the wind caught them.
Dad saw it on the last night before the fair went south. He stood a long time with his hands in his coat pockets, then said the water looked cold, which from him was a compliment. He never did get to the coast. We were loading the generator when he told me to keep the panel, and I still have it, folded in the van, the sun coming up on a sea nobody on the route ever saw.
