Floating island with mountains and light bulb
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on paper shows a rocky island floating in the air, with a light bulb rising above it into a stippled cloud. Mountains, pine trees, grass and a small solitary figure fill the upper landscape, drawn with fine outlines and dense dot shading. The image uses only black ink and white paper, with the island centred and isolated on the page.

The bulb in the lambing shed went with a tick like a cooling kettle, and Ruth was left holding a torch in her teeth and a ewe's slick hind legs in her hands. The lamb came anyway. It always did. She rubbed it with straw until it sneezed, wrapped the old feed sack round its shoulders and set it by the stove.

The spare bulbs were in the Land Rover, and the Land Rover was in the lane under three inches of snow. So she took the torch and climbed. The top pasture had a way of going strange in January, the cloud sitting on the drystone walls until the field seemed to lift clear of the valley and hang there over nothing. Her father used to say the place was too high for the rest of the world to bother with. He walked up here with a lantern and a dog that never came when it was called.
At the gate she stopped. Below her the fog had split, and through the gap she could see the farmhouse chimney and the one yellow square of kitchen window, the only light for miles. Beyond the wall the ground fell away into white. She thought of the lamb's small weight against the stove and the dark shed behind her.
Back in the shed she fitted the new bulb, stiff-fingered, and the light came up over the straw. The lamb lifted its head and bleated once. Ruth sat down on an upturned bucket and watched the round glow spread across the rafters, and for a while she let it be enough.
