Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The left image shows a circular design of a sun with radiating lines above stippled mountains and a dotted hillside, drawn in fine black linework. The right image shows a single bloom with five petals, several leaves and a sprig of small dotted buds, shaded in greys. Both tattoos are in black ink and greys, photographed close up against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tamsin counted the boats through the gap in the breakwater as they slid out one by one, eleven hulls against a sky the colour of wet slate. The Gannet was last, its engine coughing blue smoke. Her brother Callum still hadn't come down from the house, and the skipper had already shouted his name twice across the quay.

Across the loch the hills were still in shadow, their edges ruled with frost, and the sun sat behind them like a coin pressed against paper. Her father had a rule about waiting until the light reached the scree before hauling. She sat on a bollard with a sprig of sea thrift she had pulled from the harbour wall, its tight buds dotted like ink, and laid one flat inside the logbook.

Callum came jogging down with a paper bag of rolls and a grin that meant trouble. He said the wind had gone round to the west and the fish would follow. Tamsin looked at the glass, then at the hills, where the sun broke over the ridge and threw its rays out in thin black spokes across the water. The skipper lifted a hand, and Callum was already on board.

She stayed on the quay a moment longer, watching the sun climb clear of the peaks. Then she shut the logbook on the thrift, wrote the date in the margin, and stepped down onto the deck as the lines came off.
