Rose and floral emblem on forearms

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on the inner forearms of a person wearing a black and white striped top. The left design is a red and pink rose with dark green leaves, and the right is a blue-violet floral emblem with teal petals, orange accents and surrounding leaves. Both use bold dark outlines and solid colour fills with some soft shading, and the colour is vivid against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother, the seed merchant swore the blue rose would never take in our clay, so I didn't plant it where the frost sits. I put it against the south wall of the walled garden, where Dad's old ladder still leans, and I have been telling it stories since April, which is what you do with things that refuse to behave.

The red rose came up first, the one Grandmother bought from the nursery in Hove the summer before she went into the home. It opened in June as if it had something to prove, petals heavy as wet paper, and I cut three for the kitchen table. Its leaves went dark at the edges by July, the way they always do, and I pinched them off without thinking.

The blue one flowered in August, late and stubborn. Its centre was a small sun of orange stamens ringed with teal, and around it the leaves curled as though they were holding a secret. I sat on the bench with the trowel in my lap and waited for it to fade, but it only grew more itself, sharper and odder every week, the way Nan did at the end.

So I dug up the bed on Sunday and found the roots had knotted together underneath, the red one and the violet one, grown through each other like two people who had decided not to be divided. I left them where they were. Come down at the solstice and bring the secateurs. We will cut them apart together, or we won't, and I will make the tea either way.
