Sun tattoo on the back of the neck

Traditional · Neck · Colour · Photo

A sun is tattooed centrally on the back of a neck, with a solid red disc inside a pale ring and long, wavy orange rays. The rays and disc are outlined in heavy black linework and filled with flat, solid colour. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against smooth skin, with the head and hair cropped at the top.

Her grandmother had kept a brass sun on the parlour mantel, a plate with a red boss in the middle and rays of hammered copper beaten so thin you could see the fire through them. The old woman polished it on Sundays and said a sun needed feeding or it would sulk behind the hills. Ada took it down, wrapped it in a tea towel and carried it to the end of the platform, where the fog was thickest and the signal lamp made only a smudge.

She stood there until the Carlisle goods came up through the rails, a long shudder and then the engine's cough. The driver could not see her, nor his own fireman. But when the train slowed for the crossing, something on the platform caught his headlamp and threw it back in a hundred gold spikes, and he sounded the whistle twice because he thought the sun had come down to meet him.

The fog thinned by noon. Ada put the plate back on the mantel. It was warm to the touch, and her father never found out whether she had been asked to do it or had only offered.
