Sunflowers and lavender on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two sunflowers, one at the top and one lower down, with several stems of lavender and leaves curving up along the leg. It is drawn in clean black outline with light shading in the flower centres and petals, and no colour is visible. The design fills the outer thigh diagonally, with the blooms framing the upper and lower parts of the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sunflowers grew taller than the church that summer, and nobody in Harrowmere could agree on why. Old Hesketh said the seed had come from a travelling pedlar who swore it was from the far side of the sea, where the sun was sown like wheat. Mrs Coyle said it was the lavender's doing, that the two plants had quarrelled over the south wall and the sunflowers had turned their great faces away from the purple in a sulk that lasted until August.

What the children knew was that the bees would not go near the sunflowers in the mornings, only in the evenings, when the heads had bowed and the lavender along the lane was loud with them. So they took their jam jars down to the wall at dusk and waited, and when the bees came home they caught one each and let it go again, and called that counting.

The spring the miller's girl was sent away to her aunt in the city, she left a single seed packet pinned to the gatepost with a note in pencil: plant these where the sun lies longest. Her brother forgot about it until October, when he found the packet blown against the lavender, empty but for one grey seed stuck in the fold. He pressed it into the soil by the wall without much hope.

In the spring it came up as a sunflower, though the rest of the village swore the stem had grown from the lavender roots. Its head turned slowly through the day, the way a person turns to hear a voice in another room, and when the miller's girl came home at last, wearing her city shoes, she stood at the gate and watched it follow the light until it found her.
