Mandala tattoo on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large circular mandala sits on the outer upper arm, built from fine black linework, repeating floral motifs and small dots. The shading is light and mostly solid black lines with little grey, and the design fades softly toward its edges. Older tattoos in purple, green and red surround it, and the photograph is taken close up in natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mum, I have finished the doily you asked for, the big one with the rings of little stitched roses, and I have pinned it to the back of the chapel pew so Auntie Vi can see it before the vicar gets his hands on it. You will say it is too fussy. You always say that about my work, and you always end up wearing it on your wedding dress anyway, so save your breath.

The thread gave me trouble this week. The black silk Mr Okafor sent up from Nottingham came tangled round the spindle twice, and I sat up past midnight with the lamp turned low, picking knots out with a darning needle while the dogs snored by the range. I kept thinking of the pattern you drew for me when I was small, a circle that opened into another circle and another, every ring a little smaller than the one before, until you reached the middle where there was only a dot. You said the dot was where you start and where you end, and that it did not matter which you were doing so long as you kept your hands moving.

I have learned to trust that dot. Tomorrow, when the bells go, I will be at the back of the church with the scissors in my apron pocket, in case a bride's veil snags on the pew hooks. Watch for me in the second row. I will be the one not looking at the altar, looking instead at the shape the light makes on the flagstones, which is nearly a circle, nearly perfect, and which I am going to try to stitch by Sunday.

Your loving daughter, Nell
