Surfboard, guitar and camper van sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A loose black ink sketch shows a surfboard, an acoustic guitar and a front-on camper van in a row, with the handwritten phrase surf, jam, live in a van beneath them. The linework is rough and sketchy with uneven weight, and the background is plain white. The image is a design drawing with no colour and no body placement shown.

The van had been parked above the shingle at Porthkerris since October, and Dessa had stopped pretending it was temporary. Her brother rang every Sunday to ask when she was coming home, and every Sunday she told him the swell was building, which was true, and that the rent was a thing other people worried about, which was also true. The board leaned against the back doors with a crack along its nose I had patched twice with resin from the chandlery in town.

The guitar lived on the bench seat under a tea towel. I learned three chords from a fisherman called Tomas who played in the pub on Thursdays and never once let anyone finish a song. Dessa hummed over my fumbling until the kettle boiled, then taught me how to read the sea from the cliff path: the dark lines that meant a rip, the glassy patch that meant the wind had gone round to the west. She said you could hear a good day before you saw it.
In February a storm took the slipway and half the harbour wall, and the lifeboat crew came round asking who was living in the vans. We said nobody, which was a lie, and then Dessa picked up the guitar and played the one song Tomas had taught her, badly, with the wind howling across the car park. Two of the men started singing the chorus. By morning the van had a dent in its side and a tin of biscuits on the dashboard, and I knew we were staying on for the spring.
