Swirl-filled footprints on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
Four footprint outlines in black ink run in a loose diagonal down the upper back, each filled with curling swirl patterns. The linework is clean and even, with the swirls drawn in fine dark lines inside each shape. The image is shown in warm, low-contrast light against a soft green background, with the skin tone and dark hair framing the tattoo.

Now sit close, the lot of you, because the stove's going out and I'll not tell this twice. Up the Cut, past the three locks where the water runs thick as tea, there's a towpath nobody walks any more except the herons. Old Tobias Wren, who kept the Dunmere lock for forty years, swore he saw footprints on it every spring morning. Not boot prints. Bare feet, small ones, four at a time, stepping down the grass like someone who had hopped the stones on a dare.

Only these feet had swirls in them. Wren said the marks were filled with the same curl the water makes behind a sluice gate, round and round and never getting anywhere. He reckoned a girl had walked that path once, a long time back, when her father's boat was tied at the bottom lock and the river rose in the night and took it. She went looking along the bank with her toes in the mud, and the mud took the shape of her, and the river remembered her shape the way it remembers everything.
Wren went out one morning with a bucket of lime to mark the prints so he could tell the council they were a hazard. He got as far as the gate. When he came back the bucket was full of river water and the lime had gone, and his own boots were standing empty on the step, filled with the same little curls, dry as bone.
So if you're ever walking the Cut in April and the grass looks trodden, don't follow it. Or follow it, and mind you tell me where it stops. Now, who's for cocoa?
