Looped knot symbol on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fine line tattoo of interlocking loops forms a knot-like symbol with a tapering base and a smaller loop nested at its centre. The linework is even and crisp, with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the skin. The image is a close, straight-on crop in neutral light, with fingers and hair visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Your father's hands are black to the second knuckle when he shows you the knot, and he never once looks up from the rope. "Three loops and a tail," he says. "The small one sits in the middle so nothing works loose." You are nine, and the hemp hangs in the winding house at Hollin Shaw like coiled animals asleep. You practise until your fingers blister, drawing the tapered end through until the whole thing sits tight and even.

By sixteen you are on the pithead, testing the cages before the morning shift. The older men call you the knot lad, though never to your face. Each time you finish a hitch you murmur the words he taught you, that a good knot holds whatever the dark decides. The overman signs your book without reading it. Down the lane, Ruth from the chapel sews blue wool into the men's collars, and at six the whistle goes and the lamps swing out into the rain.
The February morning the cable parts at Number Four, the cage drops a few yards before the brake bites, and the shift comes up shaken but whole. Afterwards the inspector asks who tied the lowering hitch. Nobody answers, because everybody knows it was your father, three years in the churchyard, and his knot held when the steel did not. You walk to the lamp room with your hands shaking, and the rope stores still smell of tar.
That spring you splice a new cable and tie the hitch the old way, three loops with the little one nested at the centre. You leave the tail a finger's length longer than it needs to be. When the men ask why, you tell them it is so the next lad can find it in the dark.
