Swirling stag head design in black linework
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised stag head with tall, curving antlers is built from flowing swirls, droplet shapes and concentric circles. The image uses fine black lines with dense hatching and small dots, with soft grey shading along the neck and lower swirls. It is drawn in black ink on white with no colour and a clean, centred composition.

The rain has found the gap in the awning again, so you lift the marbled sheets off the trestle before they bleed into each other. They hang from the pegs like washing, every colour from the tin dragged through size and combed into eddies. The stallholders along the Shambles have stopped asking what you are selling. Today the man from the fish stall stands dripping under your gazebo and asks what the swirls are meant to be, and you tell him they are whatever the water decides.

A girl of about nine tugs her mother's sleeve and points at the sheet nearest the edge, the one where the black ink curled up at the top like a question. Can it be a deer, she asks. You remember the method your teacher used: a single bead of ink dropped on the bath, one slow pass of the comb, and the surface hesitating before it opens. You fetch a clean tray from under the table, tip the bath, and wait for the drumming on the water to ease.
Nothing comes at first except rings. Then the rings tighten into a crown of swirls, the crown splits into two tall tines, and a head forms out of droplets and small dark eyes of ink that hold perfectly still. You lay the paper down gently and lift it clean. The girl gasps, her mother laughs, and the market noise rushes back in around them.
When you look again the stag has gone from the sheet, though the paper is dry and the lines run as they should. Out in the gutter, rainwater is turning slow circles over the cobbles, and one ring keeps bending upward toward the lamps as if it has somewhere to be. You stand with the comb in your hand until the girl is gone, and then you let the rain take the rest of the afternoon.
