Winged fairy linework tattoo design
Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a fairy with long, sweeping wings and hair that trails into curling tendrils. The linework is bold and uniform, with the wings divided into panels and the body rendered in simple contours with no shading. The design sits centred on a flat pale blue background, with a faint sprig of foliage in the lower left corner.

The glazier had promised the north window by Lammas, and by Lammas it was still a hole the shape of a hand, with ivy pushing through the tracery like wet rope. Maud Tully climbed up anyway, a bucket of lead strips knotted to her belt, because the wardens paid a penny a pane and she had never once turned down a penny.

Halfway up the ladder she heard humming. It came from the cracked lancet above her, a thin tune with no proper ending, and when she put her face to the gap a woman sat on the sill with her knees drawn up and her hair spilling down the stone in long grey tendrils that curled over the edge like smoke. Her wings were the colour of old pennies, divided into panels just like the glass Maud was meant to fit. "You're setting my lines wrong," the fairy said. "They run with the wind, not across it."
Maud argued, because arguing was cheaper than fear. She had cut every pane in that window herself from the pattern book, and the pattern book said square. The fairy only laughed and unfolded one wing, showing the leading swept in long curves from shoulder to tip, the way the ivy leaned, the way the old flags had streamed before the roof came off. Maud looked down at her own drawing, crumpled in her apron, and saw the sweep was there after all, faint beneath the pencil, as if someone had traced it long before she was born.
She cut the pane that morning on the ladder, following the curve. The fairy watched, then stepped off the sill and was gone in a flutter of grey. When the glazier came round at dusk he found the north window whole, its lines bending like a wing, and a single curl of blue glass set where the tendril had been. By the next spring the ivy had wound round that blue pane twice, as if it had been holding it up all along.
