Swirling tribal ornament on a stomach

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a torso showing a large ornamental tattoo of interlocking swirls, curls and tapering tendrils. The linework is fine and dark, filled with soft grey-teal shading that gives the design some depth. The tattoo sits to one side of the navel, and the plain skin and white clothing keep the focus on the design.

Her grandson Tobias, who was nine and believed in nothing he could not eat, dug up one root to prove it. Underneath, the roots ran in loops like a bundle of wet ribbon, and where they knotted together they had a faint grey sheen, the colour of river stones after rain. On the seventh morning the vine had reached the water butt. It had wound itself three times round the iron hoop and tapped the lid open. Inside, the rainwater was perfectly still, and on its surface lay a single curl of leaf, turning slowly, as if the whole plant had been sending its handwriting down into the dark to see who would answer.

Tobias knelt and wrote his name in the dirt beside it, letter by careful letter. The vine lifted, read it, and dropped a small white flower on the T.
