Tribal butterfly tattoo around the navel

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a bare stomach showing a tribal-style butterfly with bold black outlines, swirling tendrils and grey shaded wing panels. The design wraps around the navel, with the body of the butterfly above it and curling lines extending to both sides of the waist. The image is in black and grey against a plain teal wall, with a dark waistband at the bottom edge.

You learn the canal by its sounds before its colours. The lock gates groan at Hythe Cut, the bargeman's wife hums over the tiller, and somewhere past the willows a heron stands in the shallows like a dropped umbrella. Your father painted the Marigold's name in gold on the bow the summer you turned eleven, but he never let you touch the windlass, so you practised on the empty lock beams when the others slept.

The butterfly came in the spring the river flooded Bridge Meadow. A woman with ink on her knuckles had moored at the wharf with a sketchbook full of curling lines, and she said the wings should look like they were pulling water up off the page. You watched her draw one on the back of a ferry ticket. Her pen moved in long loops without lifting, the way the current turns over a sunken gate. Your father said nothing. He paid her in tea and a sack of coal, and she laughed and let you keep the ticket.

By August the Marigold was carrying cut timber down to Reading, and you were the one who knew where the towpath dipped under the alder roots. On the last night you tied off at the bend where the water runs slow and black. A real butterfly had been circling the lamp all evening, pale against the dark. It settled on the windlass and folded its wings shut, and you saw that the line you had steered all summer had been drawn by somebody else's hand, and that you had only been learning to follow it.
