Swirling vine tattoo down the spine
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a person's bare back, showing a tall black tattoo of scrolling vine-like flourishes running down the spine. The linework is bold and smooth, with tapering curls and solid black fills that create a feathery, flame-like silhouette. The tattoo is the clear focal point against the warm skin tones, with the head cropped out at the top and a blue garment visible at the bottom of the frame.

Peel it thinner than that, boy, or we'll be eating the lamp oil with our biscuit. Hand me the knife. Now listen, for I'll not tell this twice and the bread won't wait on a fool. The Calder Rose had a galley stove off a Liverpool chandler, cheap as sin, with a flue that ran up the bulkhead and twisted at the top like a green stem hunting for daylight. Nobody liked it. The cook before me swore it had a mind.

It had a mind the night we ran into the gale off Finisterre. Seas came over the rail like slates off a roof, the stove door burst open, and the fire went up that flue as if it meant to climb the mast. Sparks curled up the pipe in long tapering loops, orange at the heart and black at the edges, and every loop pulled another after it, the way bindweed takes a fence. The boatswain wanted the hose. I wanted my supper pan. Neither of us got what we wanted.
So I took the big cleaver off its hook and cut the flue clean where the curls began to fork, then let the fire lie down on the deck under a heap of wet sailcloth. It hissed like a cat in a bucket. The curls stayed put on the bulkhead after, scorched into the paint in a line from the deckhead to the coal bin, and the crew call it Wren's Vine to this day, though my name is not Wren and never was. Now mind that onion. Slice it across, not along, and you'll not cry half so much.
