Black tribal swirl tattoo on the abdomen
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tribal design of tapering curved bands and spiral swirls runs diagonally across the skin of the lower abdomen. The bold, smooth linework is filled in with solid black ink, with no visible shading. The warm skin tone and close framing show the tattoo against the navel area and the top of the jeans.

Dear Nell,

The seam came out thin again on Tuesday, a black ribbon that narrowed to nothing under the props, then swelled back out a yard further on as if it had changed its mind. Da says the Hollin seam is like that and no man living can read it before he has cut into it. I have been thinking about that all week, and about the picture you sent of the ironwork at the Garside works, all those curls where the rails bend.
Mr Pearce has put me on the winding engine now, which means I watch the cage go up and down the shaft all day and count the bell signals on my fingers. He lets me keep the chalk. On the back of an old timbering board I have been drawing what the seam looks like when you hold a lamp along it at dusk: a long band that tapers, then turns over on itself in two loose spirals, like smoke off the coke ovens when the wind drops. I have drawn it forty times. The last one came out right, and I wanted you to have it before anyone else sees it.
Mam wants me to sign for the Co-operative shares on Saturday, and I said I would, though I think she knows I am not staying in the village for good. Tell me what the city is like at night. Tell me whether the lamps there ever go out.
Keep the drawing flat in your book so the creases don't break the lines.
Your brother, Tom
