Symmetrical paisley ornament design
Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical ornamental design of paisley shapes, scrolls and leaf motifs, drawn in brown linework. The fine, detailed lines are shaded lightly and sit over a faint grid background. The composition is centred and mirrored, with the largest motif at the top and smaller scrolls spreading outwards to the sides and bottom.

The gentleman in room four has left his pattern book on the sideboard again, and you have been told twice not to touch it. Mrs Garside says the paper is worth more than the lodging. You turn the pages anyway, past the sea fret over the pier and the hatched shadows of a stranger's hands, until you reach the sheet with the great paisley at its crown, drawn in ink gone the colour of weak tea. Half of it is finished. The other half is only a faint blue pencil ghost on the squares.

He comes back on the Thursday tide, smelling of the harbour. In the back parlour, where the gas hisses and the wallpaper peels at the seams, he tells you that a design is only a promise kept on the far side of a fold. Crease the sheet along the spine, press it flat with the edge of a ruler, and trace what is already there. "Symmetry is cheaper than invention," he says, "and it hides the mistakes of the hand."
You do it at night with the window open and the foghorn going. Lines that wandered on the left come through the paper as sharp points on the right, leaves meeting leaves, scrolls turning inwards as if they are listening for something. By two o'clock the two halves agree with each other better than you have agreed with anyone.
In the morning room four is stripped, the book is gone, and Mrs Garside is counting spoons. Only the sheet remains, folded on the sideboard. When you open it, the two paisleys stare back at you from either side of the crease, identical in every curl, and only one of them carries your pencil marks underneath.
