Henna-style paisley and flower motifs
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a set of henna-style design motifs, including paisley shapes, layered flower heads, leaves and curling vines. The linework is fine and detailed, built from dense hatching, dots and scrolls in a single brown ink. The motifs are arranged across a soft beige background with a subtle gradient, with no body or skin visible.

The paisley shapes were the first thing I got wrong. Each one curled at the tip like a wave folding back on itself, and the flower heads sat along their outer curves in twos and threes. I took them for decoration until I laid the fourth sheet over the survey plates from the old northern basin and found the teardrops lining up with the dry channels. The dots I had been filling in as shading marked where the bores once stood.
Oyelaran, who keeps the hall's ledgers, said the drawings were only pretty things, and that the water tables had been measured properly by men with instruments. I did not argue with her. I finished the sheet anyway, a vine of scrolls spilling down the page, and pricked every dot with the finest nib I owned.
When the rains returned in spring, a boy from the lower terraces climbed the hill with an empty jar and asked where the nearest spring was. I unrolled the copy on the long table and set my finger on the largest flower. He studied it for a long while, then grinned and said that was the chapel well, and he had been drinking from it all his life.
