Black and grey · Flash

A single symmetrical ornament drawn in black on a white background, built from tapering flame-like swirls rising to a pointed tip. The linework is solid black with varied line widths, and the composition is centred and vertical with no shading or colour.

The brush had to be loaded with one breath of enamel, Ivo said, or the line would lie to you. He sat on an upturned crate in Dougie Pryce's yard with the Austin's bonnet propped against the wall, and Tess kept asking why a wedding car needed pinstripes at all. Nobody in Hull paints a bridal Austin, she said. They tie ribbons on it, drive it to the chapel and forget the paint by Monday.

Ivo didn't answer until he had drawn the stem, a single hair of black rising from the bumper to a point as fine as a needle. Then he began the flames, one tapered curl at a time, each one thinning as it climbed, the way smoke thins when a window is opened. The scrolls came last, two open rings at the base, because his wife had once told him a circle was the only shape that never needed finishing.

The bride's father came out at noon with a flask of tea and stood watching the brush. He asked what the thing was called. Ivo said his own father had called it a pinstripe flame, and his father before him had called it nothing at all, because a man who paints for a living does not stop to name what his hand already knows. The old man nodded, walked back indoors without paying, and Tess said that was the finest compliment in the trade.

That evening the Austin left for the chapel with ribbons snapping from the mirrors. Ivo stayed behind, cleaning the brush in turpentine until the bristles sprang back. On the rear wing, where the sun would catch the enamel as the car rolled away, he had painted a tiny point at the very top of the flame and, beside it, his initials, so small that only another pinstriper would think to look.
