Flame and spiral tattoo design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a single black linework design on a plain white background. A stylised flame or bud shape with three pointed tips rises from a long, tapering stroke that curls down and finishes in a tight spiral. The lines are solid and smooth with varied thickness, and the design is centred and isolated with no skin or body part visible.

At ten past three the corridor lights on Ward Six had been dimmed to their blue setting, and Marguerite Oyelaran stood at the sluice sink holding a box of matches she had no use for. Mr Haskett in bay four had asked for a light for his pipe, a pipe he had not smoked since the year his daughter was born, and she had refused him with a kindness that made her feel like a liar.

She took a spare tea light from the drawer where the chaplain kept them for vigils and carried it down the corridor cupped in her palm, as if it might blow out on its own. The fire door sighed behind her and the flame leaned, its thin tail bending into a curl, the way steam bends above the kettle. In the staff room Ferris was asleep sitting up with his lanyard across his chest, and nobody else was awake to see her go.

She sat on the plastic chair beside his bed and held the light low, where he could watch it without it touching anything. He looked at it for a long time. "My wife said a candle ought to be left alone once it's lit," he said. "You don't keep poking at it." Marguerite nodded. The flame had three tongues at its crown, the tallest reaching for the ceiling, and beneath it the wax ran in a slow ribbon down the tin and coiled tighter and tighter until it stopped.

At half past four the light guttered. Haskett was asleep with his mouth open and his hand loose on the blanket. She pinched the wick, wrote "settled, no distress" on the board, and watched a grey thread of smoke rise from the cold metal, draw itself up straight, then unwind into nothing above the bed rail.
