Tattoo outline being inked with a machine
Black and grey · Photo
A gloved hand holds a tattoo machine over skin, inking a dotted black outline of a rounded shape. Thin blue guide lines run diagonally beside the work, suggesting a stencil or drawn placement marks. The image is shot close up with a shallow focus, and the background is dark and out of focus.

The circle he was tracing belonged to the well at Sallow Cross, which the crown had claimed three summers back. Every dot had to sit the same distance from the last. His master had taught him to count his breath between them, in and out, so the rhythm would hold even when his hand shook. Behind him the mill bell began, and he lost his count and had to go back to the start.
By dusk the circle was closed, a ring of small black stops sitting on the vellum like beads on a string. Old Hesketh came out with a lantern, looked at the work for a long time, and said nothing about the lost count. He only took the pen from Perrin's hand, wiped it on his sleeve, and pressed the stopper back into the ink.
"Now the river can move all it likes," he said. "The well stays where we put it."
