Celtic knot band tattoos on two fingers

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown close up, each with a black Celtic knotwork band tattooed around a finger. The linework is bold and solid, with the interlaced knot pattern filling a narrow ring around each finger. The ink is black on skin with soft natural lighting and a shallow focus across the hands.

The nets came up off the Maren Rose with a tangle of weed and crab in them, and Nell Garvie stood at the stern with her knife out before the skipper had finished swearing. Forty fathoms of twine, rotted through in one corner, with a hole the size of a dinner plate. Her brother Callum was already reaching for the mending needle he had been too proud to touch since their grandmother's funeral.

Gran had taught them both on the quay at Skerrow, sitting on an upturned creel with her skirts hitched up against the wind. Every knot had to lie flat and hold its shape, she said, and a good mend should look like it had always been there. She used to draw the old Galloway patterns in the wet sand with a gutting knife, interlaced lines that wandered round and came back to where they started. You followed the line, she said, and you never found the end of it.

They worked through the night under a single lamp, the deck slick and the wind coming in sideways off the Firth. Callum wanted to sell the boat in the spring and go south to his wife's people. Nell kept her eyes on the needle and said nothing, which he took for agreement, which it was not. By four the hole was closed. To keep the cut strands from unravelling at the join, Callum wound a band of waxed twine around her finger and knotted it, then Nell did the same for him, weaving over and under until the pattern ran in a tight ring of black tar and knuckled wool.

At dawn the Maren Rose slid out past the harbour wall with the mended net paying out behind her. Neither of them had cut the bands off yet. Callum held his hand up to the grey light and turned it slowly, and Nell did not tell him that the line had come round to where it began.
