Teal and orange bird on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large bird with a long curved beak and a glowing orange halo-like shape behind its head covers the upper arm. Its body and tail feathers are drawn with fine, flowing outlines and shaded in teal, pink and red, with orange and gold accents along the trailing plumes. The design fills the arm from shoulder to elbow against a plain background.

The guard at Vell Bridge wanted the lantern unwrapped, so Marta set it on the scarred counter and peeled back the wet sacking one fold at a time. Outside, the river ran high and brown under a frost-grey sky. Inside the hut the stove ticked and the ink pot had a skin of ice on it.

The bird inside was the size of a loaf. Teal glass made its body, rose and red its breast, and gold threads trailed from its tail like something spilled from a loom. Her uncle had blown the amber disc behind its head the winter before he went north, and told her a phoenix needed a sun to climb out of. The guard tapped his pen against the declaration form. Glass, two kilograms, it read. The bird weighed three.
He asked what it was for. Marta did not know how to answer in his language, so she tilted the lantern toward the window. The ridge was cutting the first light, and the sun came through the amber halo and threw a warm ring across the counter, across the stamp, across the guard's knuckles. The feathers caught fire in pieces: teal, then orange, then the red edges of every curl.
He held his hand in that ring of light for a long moment. Then he drew a line through the weight, wrote bird in careful capitals, and pushed the stamp aside. 'Take it over before the sun moves,' he said. 'It won't look like that after noon.'
