Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large paisley motif with curling teardrop shapes, filled with stripes, dots, small flowers and scalloped patterns. The outlines are bold and the fills are flat, with no shading. Pink, teal, green, yellow and orange ink sit against the skin, and the design sweeps diagonally down the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Put that shawl down, Hamid, and sit closer to the fire, because the wind is coming over the Sarvan Pass and it has never once been polite. You want to know why the cloth from the high valleys has teardrops that curl over at the top like a ram's horn? I will tell you, but only if you stop counting the mules.

Zarina was the weaver's daughter in the village under the glacier, and she dyed everything she touched. Pomegranate for the orange, indigo for the teal, marigold for the yellow that made her father cough at supper. One autumn a trader came up with salt and asked for a shawl no one in the lowlands owned. She said she would make it if he carried her thread down with his own two hands and did not let a single hank touch the ground.

He did not keep his word. He sold the thread at the first market and came back with nothing but a bad chest and a story about bandits. So Zarina sat through the long winter with a drop spindle and her grandmother's needle, and she stitched the shawl anyway. Every teardrop got its stripes, every stripe got its dots, and in the middle of each pale green swell she set a small flower with five yellow petals, one for each day he had been late.

When the snow thinned he came back up for the shawl. She folded it on the wall and handed it over without a word. In the sun he unfolded it and stopped, because every flower had five petals and five was the number of stones on the cairn above his own village, the one he had sworn never to mention to anyone. She had been stitching his road home all winter, and he had no way to say so except to lay his hand flat over the cloth, the way a man warms himself at a fire.
