THINK spelt in periodic table element tiles
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three boxed periodic table elements side by side: Th (thorium, atomic number 90, mass 232), In (indium, 49, 115) and K (potassium, 19, 39), which together spell THINK. The boxes are drawn in clean, even black linework with no shading, and the element names and numbers are printed inside each tile. The photograph is taken close up against plain skin with soft natural light, with the tattoo centred across the frame.

The periodic table came off the lab wall in March, and when Ray Oddie hung it back up in June, three tiles along the bottom had been moved. Someone had cut out thorium, indium and potassium and pasted them in a row, with the glue smeared across the grout. Ray knew the atomic numbers without looking: ninety, forty-nine, nineteen. He did not need the tiles to tell him what they spelt, because the whole of Year Nine had been spelling it at him since Easter.

He found the cutter in the detention book, a boy called Tomasz Benedek who sat by the fume cupboard and never touched the Bunsen burners. Ray did not shout. He waited until lunch, when the lab smelled of canteen toast, and sat on the stool opposite. "Why these three?" he asked. Tomasz shrugged at the poster. "Thorium glows in the dark, sir. Indium's so soft you can squash it with a thumbnail. Potassium goes off if you drop it in water." He paused. "Nobody reads the boxes. They just see the letters."
Ray thought about that for longer than was comfortable. He had spent thirty years believing the chart was for the children who already understood it. He looked at the crooked row, the pale square of old adhesive, and the small numbers printed in the corners where nobody ever looked.
He did not peel the tiles off. He copied the three boxes onto a fresh sheet in pencil, drew a fourth beside them with its symbol left blank, and pinned it under the window where the light caught it. Then he went back to his marking and waited to see who would fill the gap.
