THINK spelt in periodic table element tiles
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
Three square periodic table tiles sit side by side, reading Th, In and K to spell THINK. Each tile has a thin, even black outline, with atomic numbers, element names and mass numbers printed in small type. The tattoo is black ink only and is shown in a close, straight-on view against plain skin.

Ruth had been technician at Hollin Lane for twenty-two years, long enough to tell a sealed bottle from a sulking one by the weight of the cap. The cupboard under the fume hood held the rejects: foil-wrapped scraps nobody had signed out since the old head retired, every jar tagged in biro. On the Monday after half-term she found three of them pushed to the back, lids furred with dust, labels curling like old receipts.

She lined them up on the bench under the strip light. Thorium, read the first, a dull grey lump that looked like dishwater had set. Indium, read the second, soft enough to dent with a thumbnail. Potassium, the third, should have been under oil and wasn't. Then she saw the order and laughed out loud, alone in the prep room, because read left to right the three labels spelt a word. She knew exactly whose idea that had been. Owen Pryce had been lab monitor the year the inspector came, and he had never once in his life resisted a joke with a deadline on it.
She did not move them. She wiped the dust off the lids, left the jars where they stood, and went back to counting pipettes. On Friday the Year Ten set filed past the bench on their way to the sinks, and a boy near the back read the labels aloud without being asked, Th, In, K, and stopped to frown at the lot of them. Ruth, who had spent two decades correcting pronunciation, kept her mouth shut and let him work it out.
