Thorned rose vine with fairy and dragonfly
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A thorned vine winds vertically across the sheet, with a large open rose near the top, a winged insect above it and a winged fairy seated on a branch near the bottom. The linework is crisp black ink, with fine hatching and dark shading on the petals and vine, and small leaves and buds along the stems. The design is drawn in black on a pale background, with the composition running from top to bottom.

The snow had shut the Coldharbour road by noon, and by dusk there were eleven of us crammed into the taproom of the Three Hares, none of whom had money for the rooms upstairs. Mother counted the candles twice and said nothing, which is how I knew she was frightened of the stranger in the corner.

He had come in with drift on his shoulders and a single open rose pinned to his collar, its petals pale at the edges. He ordered nothing but a bowl of hot water. Nobody asks a man what he wants with hot water in a blizzard. We watched him set the bowl on the hearth and lay a dragonfly on the surface, and the creature did not drown. It sipped, folded its wings like spun sugar, and sat there while the room held its breath.
"Bring a dragonfly in out of the frost and the thorns follow it," said old Pell from the settle, and he was right, though nobody believed him until the vine came. It crept out from under the floorboards in a slow black line, branching and budding, pricking its way along the beams toward the fire. Where it touched the wall the plaster cracked. Where it touched a sleeping boot the leather split. Mother took the poker to it, and the thorns simply grew around the iron.
At midnight a fairy no longer than my finger unfolded from the highest bud, sat down on the lowest branch as though she had paid for the seat, and began braiding a single leaf into her hair. The stranger was gone by morning, his bowl dry and the rose left on the table. The road had cleared. The vine stayed. Mother never took the rent again, and every winter since, a green shoot pushes up through the hearthstone, and I leave it a cup of hot water.
