Vertical floral scroll tattoo design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a tall, symmetrical-leaning design built from three stacked clusters of roses, leaves and scrolling acanthus-style swirls, linked by trailing stems. Small star or sparkle motifs are scattered along both sides of the column. The linework is fine and delicate, with light hatching on the leaves and petals to suggest shading, and the design is drawn on a cream paper background.

You have been asked to paint the ceiling of the Hollow Court, and the queen has given you three days and a pot of silver leaf that will not stay put. The scaffold creaks under you as you work from the top down, rendering the great curling acanthus that the court's masons have always called the tide. Below you, the courtiers murmur about the roses. They are supposed to bloom, the steward says, but every rose you have drawn so far has come out shut, its petals closed like fists.

On the third morning a girl from the laundries climbs the ladder with a basket of cold tea and asks why you keep drawing the stars so small. You tell her the old law says a ceiling must hold the night, and that you have never once seen the night from inside a palace. She laughs and tells you the stars in the kitchens are bigger, because the cooks have been sneaking them into the bread for luck. She reaches up with a wet thumb and presses a tiny sparkle onto the plaster beside the last rose.
That rose opens by evening. By dawn the whole column of scrolls has come alive, and the steward, who has not slept, walks beneath it counting petals and finds that every star has a cook's thumbprint where the silver went down. You leave the scaffold to the girl. She still insists it is the best ceiling in the kingdom, and you have never been able to tell her she is wrong.
