Three birds in flight on the collarbone
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Three solid black bird silhouettes fly in a diagonal line across the upper chest, with the largest bird at the top right and the smaller two trailing towards the lower left. The shapes are filled with flat black ink with no visible shading or fine detail, and the skin around them is pale with no other colour. The close crop shows the collarbone, shoulder and a black strap top, with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame.

The last of the pass was shut by Tuesday, and by Thursday the only traffic on the Hallow Road was the wind. My father had kept the Coldharbour Inn for thirty-one years and had never once let a guest leave into weather, so when three geese came low over the yard that morning he stood in the doorway with a tea towel over his shoulder and watched them the way he watched a bill he had not expected.

They were heading south, slow and deliberate, the largest bird in front and the other two trailing off to the left like a sentence that had lost its end. Nobody in the taproom looked up except Mrs Pryor, who said geese knew more about the weather than the Met Office, and then, because she had waited all winter to say it, that the Met Office knew nothing at all. I went out in my boots to see them clear the wall. The leader turned its head once, as if counting us, and then the three of them were over the ridge and gone.
By dusk the snow came sideways and the road vanished under it. My father lit the lamps in the windows and told the two lorry drivers they would sleep by the fire whether they liked it or not, and nobody argued. I sat up with the ledger and kept thinking about the birds, how they had not hurried or fussed, only gone where the air was still open.
In the morning the back window was furred solid with frost, but the sun found a patch of it and the glass cleared in three dark shapes, one large and two small, trailing away towards the corner. I left them there until the plough came through.
