Three birds in flight on the inner arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black silhouettes of birds in flight are tattooed in a loose diagonal line across the inside of an arm. The birds are simple solid shapes with no interior detail, and they are set against smooth, pale skin. The background is softly out of focus, with a rolled brown sleeve at the top of the frame.

Her son Edvard had gone to the eastern towns the spring before, and she had stopped asking the fishermen whether they had seen him.

One evening in October, when the wind had turned to knives, a boy knocked at her door with a crust of bread in his fist and a fever in his eyes. He said his name was Tobias and that he had walked from the harbour at Selve, where the birds nested in the cliffs. He had a message, he said, though he had forgotten half of it. Maren gave him broth and a blanket by the stove, and in the night he woke crying for a mother he did not name.
In the morning the gulls were gone from the sky. Maren went down to the shore and found three feathers pressed into the wet sand, grey on one side and white on the other, laid out in a line pointing north. She walked the line for a day and a night. At the edge of the salt marsh she found Edvard sitting on an upturned boat, mending a net, and when he looked up he did not seem surprised at all. He only asked whether she had counted the birds, and she told him she had, and he said that was good, because they were always counting on her.
