Three feather sketches on cream paper
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
Three feathers are drawn in pen on cream paper, one lying horizontally at the top and two angled below. The quills are outlined with fine hatched lines, and the vanes are built up with dense strokes that fade toward the edges. The image is in black ink and grey tones with plain, uncluttered composition and no body part shown.

The wind takes the third page before you can close the book, and it goes skating across the scree like a bird that has forgotten how to land. You lunge, trap a corner under your boot, and kneel on the cold stone with your heart going. Above you the Hollin Gap is already grey with cloud, and the last post coach left the valley an hour ago. Nobody else will climb this road before the thaw.

The sketchbook belonged to Ida Marl, who kept the hut at the top of the pass for forty winters and drew birds on every blank page she found. You have carried her things up and down this mountain since she died, mostly because nobody else would. The three feathers on the open page were copied from the ones she kept in a jam jar on the sill: a long grey primary, a curved tail feather with its fringe curling like a fern, and a soft brown one that had been caught on the latch through a month of gales.
You find the rest of the sheets tucked under a cairn at the lip of the gap, pinned flat by a stone. The ink is still dark. Ida drew the quills with fine hatching so the shafts looked hollow, and shaded the vanes so they faded to nothing at their edges, as if the feathers were leaving the paper a little at a time.
You set the book back on the sill inside the hut, under the jar, and weigh the cover down with the same stone. Going down, you do not look back at the pass. The first snow begins to fall on the path behind you, and somewhere up in the cloud a bird she never got round to drawing calls once and goes quiet.
