Stylised feather doodle in black ink
Black and grey · Flash
A single feather is drawn in black ink on cream paper, with its barbs divided into curved panels, spirals and rows of small dots. The linework is fine and even, and the patterns are built from hatching, crosshatching and solid fills. The feather runs diagonally from the lower left to the upper right, with the tip at the top and open space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ferryman's daughter kept a ledger of every feather that washed up on the slipway at Harrow Cove. She counted them the way her father counted fish, by pattern rather than number. Gulls came in grey and plain. The terns brought stripes. But the feathers that came in with the autumn gales were different, and she drew each one in the back of her copybook before the tide could take it.

One grey morning a feather arrived whole, longer than her arm, its tip curled like a wave about to break. Its barbs were cut into panels, each one filled with tight lines, and between the panels ran rows of small round holes, as if something had pecked them out in a hurry. She sat on the slipway and drew it for three hours, and when she looked up the fog had lifted and a boat was waiting at the mooring with no one in it.
Her father had always said the sea gave back what it had borrowed, and never all at once. She rowed out to the boat with the copybook under her arm. The oars were already wet, and the feather lay across the thwart, pointing toward the open water where the light had gone the colour of ink. She understood then that the drawing was a map, and that she had only to follow the crosshatching to find the reef where the lost boats still rode at anchor, their sails made of the same dark, patient lines.
