Tiered tower with spire on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall, tiered tower with a pointed spire is drawn in black ink across the inner forearm, running from the wrist towards the elbow. The building is outlined in fine, even lines, and its rows of windows are rendered as small dots and short marks. The image is a warm-toned close view with a wooden floor and bar stools blurred in the background.

The tower was never on any map, which is why Teodor had to draw it from memory on the back of a tram ticket. He sat at the bench on Carrow Street with a 0.1 nib and a jar of Indian ink, and he would not let me help. Every window was a single dot, placed with the patience of a man counting grains of rice. Ten tiers. He said a spire must taper like a held breath, and he kept measuring the air with his thumb as though it might be cut wrong.

When the council sent a surveyor asking why the Carrow Street plot had a building on the hand-drawn site plan, Teodor only shrugged and pointed at the drawing. The surveyor squinted, counted the windows out loud, and went quiet at the seventh tier. Then he admitted that his own mother had lived on the seventh floor of a block pulled down in 1961, and that the number of windows was exactly right.
I think about that every time I open the drawer. Teodor never said where the tower stood, only that it had stood. He left the bench to me in March, with the ink jar still half full and a note tucked under it: keep the dots light, they are people who did not get to leave.
