City skyline tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a city skyline with several buildings and a tall spired tower sits on the inner wrist of a hand resting on a wooden surface. The linework is thin and outlined, with light hatching on some building faces and no solid fill. The image is in black and grey, with a dark sleeve above and a beaded bracelet on the wrist beside a tattoo machine.

The lodger in room four drew the skyline on the back of a tide table, pressing so hard with his biro that the lines came through onto the next page. I found it on the Tuesday when I went up to strip the bed. He had gone off on the early train without leaving a forwarding address or the rent for the week.

Thirty-one buildings, I counted, and then counted them again to be sure. Most were plain boxes with windows scratched in, but the tallest had a spire like a pencil sharpened to a point, and beside it a stepped crown that looked like a wedding cake left out in the rain. Under it he had written nothing at all. Mrs Pargeter from number nine said it was an American city, and that men who drew cities they had never seen were usually trying to remember one they had.

I put the table in a frame above the basin, which was foolish, because from there the only view is the sea wall and a gull that sits on the chimney pot as if it pays the rates. Every morning I wiped the glass, and every morning that spire seemed to point past my shoulder at the window, as though it wanted to climb out and look at the water.

On the Thursday a postcard arrived with no stamp and no return address. It had the same spire inked on the front in grey, and on the back, in that same hard pressing hand, a single line: the water here is the wrong colour.
