Tiger lilies and butterflies on the back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several tiger lilies with orange and red petals, dark spotting and black outlines, alongside two black and grey butterflies. Thin black swirls, a stem and a line of small dots link the flowers across the skin. The colour is bright and mostly saturated on the flowers, with the butterflies rendered in shaded greys, and the design wraps diagonally over the upper back.

The marzipan lilies have been drying on greaseproof since midnight, and you have ruined four of them already. Nadia takes the fifth from your palm without a word, turns it under the bulb and sets it on the tray like a sleeping bird. "Too much orange at the tip," she says. "Tiger lilies are not shy. They are bold at the throat and nervous at the edge."

The ovens tick as they cool from the first bake. Outside, the High Street is still black, and a single bin lorry grinds past the shutters. You work the piping bag with the flat of your thumb, the way she showed you, dragging thin black swirls from the stem across the cake board. Dots of sugar pearl march beside them, nine, then eleven, because she says odd numbers look placed by hand rather than by machine.

By half five your wrists ache and the loaves are out, crusts crackling as they sit on the racks. Nadia brushes the cake with apricot glaze, and the petals catch the light of the one lamp you left on. She crouches and squints along the surface. "There," she says. "Now they look like they are leaning towards something."

You carry the cake to the van as the first grey light spreads over the car park, and the orange petals hold the glow. Two sugar butterflies wait in a box beside it, their wings still soft. The driver whistles. Nadia pulls the doors shut and says nothing, which from her is the finest praise there is.
