Lily, daisy and peacock feather on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a lily and a large daisy-like flower in grey and brown shading, with a turquoise rose below and a turquoise and black peacock feather extending down towards the arm. Fine dotted linework forms vines and stems that link the flowers, and soft blue wash adds depth to the petals and feather. The design wraps over the shoulder blade and upper back, with the photo framed from behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor never let me sell the blue roses before nine, not even in the rain, and on the Tuesday the feathers came in she stood under the awning with her arms folded like a bouncer. Water ran off the canvas in a rope and hit the zinc bucket with a sound like a clock that had lost its nerve. I had forty lilies wrapped in brown paper and the peacock feathers laid flat in a tray, each eye staring up at nothing in particular.

A man in a yellow cagoule asked for the feather with the bruised blue ring, the one nobody else wanted because it looked too much like a bad bruise. He paid in coins he counted twice. He said his daughter had drawn a garden on the back of a bus ticket and he wanted to get it right. I told him the blue was dye, which was a lie, and he said he knew, and that was the first honest thing anyone had said at that stall all morning.

After he went, Mrs Okafor lifted the big grey daisy out of the bucket, the one whose petals had gone soft at the edges, and tucked it behind my ear. She said the stall was never really about flowers. People walked past the lilies a hundred times without stopping, and then one day they wanted the thing nobody had bothered to look at. You kept the odd stems back for them, she said, and you never asked why.

The rain thinned to a mist by four. The man in the yellow cagoule came back up the lane with the feather held out in front of him like a lit taper, and I watched him stop under the lamp to check the blue against the grey sky.
