The snow came over Keld Pass faster than Anselm had expected, and by the third hour his six mules had stopped trusting the track. He walked at the lead with a lantern he could not see by, counting the animals under his breath the way his mother had taught him, by the names she gave them: Bread, Shy, Old Pim, the two greys, and the bad-tempered one called Sorrow. The road had no edge he could feel. It only went on, one white bend after another, and he began to think the road itself might be the joke.

At the top of the pass stood a waystone, and beside it the inn of Gretel Harrow, who kept a fire lit for anyone fool enough to be out. She had heard him come up the last slope shouting at his mules, and when he stumbled through her door she only asked what he had been shouting. He told her it was the thing his grandfather used to bellow across the valley whenever the road seemed too long: to infinity and beyond. Gretel laughed until she coughed. Then she said the stone remembered every word spoken plainly at the top of the pass, and that a man who gave it something true would never be lost on it again.

He went back out before dawn with a stub of chalk and a cold hand, and wrote the words across the face of the waystone in capitals as steady as he could make them. The wind took the edges off by spring. By autumn the letters were grey and soft. Anselm still drove that road every year, and every year he stopped by the stone, touched the faded words, and counted his mules aloud, the way he had been taught.
