Tuesday, and the snow has not stopped since the coach turned back at the Harrow Stone. Aunt Maud says we must feed everyone under this roof until the road opens, which means the good flour is nearly gone and the mutton has been simmering since dawn. Four travellers are settled in the back parlour now, wrapped in every blanket we own, and only one of them will sit still long enough for a proper conversation. He is the fellow with the hat.

The hat is grey felt gone soft at the brim, with a band of pink ribbon wound round it and a single feather tucked in at the side like an afterthought. Someone has worked swirls into the crown, the kind of pattern frost makes on a window if you lean close enough. He hung it on the peg by the kitchen door as though it were a faithful dog, and every time I passed it I half expected it to turn its head. Its loose ribbon had come untied on the stairs, so I tied it back onto the brim in a bow, which I think he noticed and did not mention.

This morning the peg was empty. The back door stood open a finger's width, and the drift against the step had a long, neat hollow in it where someone had walked out backwards. Out in the yard, the snowman the children built on Sunday wore the hat at a jaunty angle, the pink band bright against the white, and the ribbon had been looped twice around its middle. Under the brim someone had pushed a folded note with my name on it. It said only: Keep the seat warm. I owe you a dance.
