Hourglass with skull across the back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
An hourglass fills the frame, with a skeletal figure curled inside the upper bulb and a skull resting in the lower section. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the skeleton and glass a three-dimensional look. Wispy smoke-like forms surround the hourglass, and the tattoo is shown in black ink and greys against bare skin.

The dough had been proving forty minutes longer than it should, and Dorota pressed a floured thumb into the nearest ball and watched the dimple sit there, sullen and unhurried. Behind her the ovens ticked as they cooled from the first batch. Above the racks hung the old hourglass her uncle had bought at a Margate jumble sale, its glass clouded at the neck, its sand a grey that looked more like ash than sugar in the lamplight.

Stanislaw had sworn the thing ran true to a minute. He had also sworn the flour was weighed, which it had not been, and that the scratched brass frame would outlast the shop, which it might. She lifted it down now and set it running on the steel bench, watching the stream thin to a thread the way she had watched him do every morning for eleven years, until the last grains dropped and the upper bulb sat empty.
Outside the shutter, the sky over the car park had turned from black to the colour of weak tea. A delivery van idled at the kerb, its headlights sliding across the glass. She had been counting the wrong thing. The dough did not care what the sand said. It would rise when it was warm enough, and the cold had crept in all night because she had been too tired to light the back cupboard.
She lit the proving cupboard, slid the racks inside, and left the old glass lying on its side with its sand spent, for once content to let the bread decide the hour.
