Colour tattoo on a flank of skin, styled as torn skin revealing a blue sky with two swallows, grey clouds and a rainbow, in a realistic style.

Torn skin revealing sky and rainbow

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The design shows skin peeling back to reveal a blue sky with two swallows in flight, one near the centre and one at the upper right. Soft grey shading gives the clouds volume, while the swallows are rendered in dark grey and the rainbow has smooth, saturated bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. The torn edges are shaded to suggest depth and lift, and the composition runs diagonally down the skin.

The plaster in the back room gave way on the third morning of the snow, and you were the one holding the scraper when it did. It came away in a long ragged strip, curling like wet paper, and beneath it was not brick but sky. Someone had painted it decades ago: a wash of blue so bright it seemed to hum against the grey light from the window, with clouds shaded soft as wool along their edges.

Mrs Tennant came in with her tea and stood very still. She said her husband had painted it the summer they bought the place, when the swallows nested in the stable and he swore they were the only honest creatures in Cumbria. Two of them were still up there, dark against the blue, one low near the middle of the wall and one climbing toward the corner as if it had somewhere to be. Further along, a rainbow arced down toward the skirting board, red and orange and yellow, green, blue, purple, every band still bright after thirty winters.

You wanted to plaster it over before the guests came down for supper. She said no. The road was closed to the village, the post had stopped, and the only thing the inn had that was not frozen was the view she had lost behind that wall. So you cleared the dust with a damp cloth, lit the lamps, and sat in front of it while the snow ticked against the glass.

By dawn the wind had dropped. Through the gap in the plaster one swallow was gone and the other remained, and when you opened the shutters the real sky was the same colour as the painted one, which felt like a joke someone had been waiting thirty years to tell.
